Coming into operation in accordance with Article 1(2)

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 39(1) of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996(1), and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Courses for Drink-Drive Offenders (Experimental Period) (Extension) Order (Northern Ireland) 2000.

(2) This Order shall come into operation on the day after it is affirmed by resolution of the Assembly.

Extension of experimental period

2.  The end of 2005 is hereby specified in place of the end of 2000 for the purposes of Article 39(1) of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 (experimental period for the application of Article 36 of that Order).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

Article 39(1) of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 provides that no order shall be made under Article 36 of that Order (which provides that courts acting for designated areas have the power to order that a period of disqualification imposed on a person convicted of a drink-drive offence be reduced if by a date specified in the order, the offender satisfactorily completes a course approved by the Department) after the end of 2000 or such later date as may be specified. This Order specifies the end of 2005 in place of the end of 2000.
