Temporary Speed Limit (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

WHEREAS the Temporary Speed Limit (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996(1) prohibits the driving of motor vehicles at a speed greater than 50 miles per hour on the lengths of road specified in Schedule 1 to that Order, and prohibits the driving of motor vehicles at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on the roads and lengths of road specified in Schedule 2 to that Order, for a period of 4 months from 28th December 1996;

AND WHEREAS the Department of the Environment is satisfied that it is desirable in the interests of safety to continue to restrict the speed of motor vehicles on those roads and lengths of road;

NOW THEREFORE the Department, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 51(4) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(2) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Temporary Speed Limit (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 29th April 1997.

Continuance in force of provisions of S.R. 1996 No. 535

2.  The provisions of Articles 2 and 3 of the Temporary Speed Limit (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996 are hereby continued in force for a period of 4 months from 28th April 1997.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order continues in force the provisions of the Temporary Speed Limit (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996 (S.R. 1996 No. 535). It prohibits in the interests of safety the driving of motor vehicles—

1.  at more than 50 miles per hour on the eastbound carriageway of the Motorway M3, from a point approximately 926 metres east of its junction with the Motorway M2, to a point approximately 1,426 metres east of that junction and on the off-slip road from the Motorway M3 to Belfast Harbour Estate, from its junction with the Motorway M3, to a point approximately 85 metres east of that junction;

and

2.  at more than 30 miles per hour on the T1 Trunk Road, Belfast; the eastbound carriageway of Sydenham By-Pass, Route A2, Belfast, from its junction with the T1 Trunk Road, to a point approximately 250 metres east of its junction with Dee Street; the off-slip road from the Motorway M3 to Belfast Harbour Estate, from a point approximately 85 metres east of its junction with the Motorway M3, to a point approximately 155 metres east of that junction; the on-slip road from Belfast Harbour Estate to the T1 Trunk Road, from a point approximately 100 metres north of its junction with the T1 Trunk Road, to that junction; and on the link road connecting (a) the off-slip road from the Motorway M3 to Belfast Harbour Estate and (b) the on-slip road from Belfast Harbour Estate to the T1 Trunk Road

for a further period of 4 months commencing on 29th April 1997.

Any person who acts in contravention of the Order shall be guilty of an offence under the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale (£1,000).

Traffic signs indicating the effect of the Order have been erected on the roads.
