FIRE SERVICES

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 9(5) of the Fire Services (Northern Ireland) Order 1984(1), and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 25th August 1997.
2.—(1) The Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1979(2) shall be amended in accordance with paragraphs (2) and (3).
(2) In regulation 5 (appointment in the rank of junior firefighter) in paragraph (1)(c) the letters “(c)” and “(e)” shall be omitted.
(3) In regulation 6 (promotion to, or appointment in, the rank of firefighter)—
(a)in paragraph (1)—
(i)in sub-paragraph (b) the words “and shall not have attained the age of 31 years,” and
(ii)sub-paragraphs (c) and (e),
shall be omitted;
(b)in paragraph (2) in sub-paragraph (b) the letters “(c)” and “(e)” shall be omitted; and
(c)in paragraph (3)—
(i)for sub-paragraph (a) there shall be substituted—
“(a)Paragraph (1)(a), (b), (d) and (ee) shall apply also in relation to the qualifications for appointment of a person as a retained member of the fire brigade.”, and
(ii)sub-paragraph (b) shall be omitted.

These Regulations further amend the Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1979 by removing from the requirements which must be satisfied before a person can be promoted to, or appointed in, the rank of firefighter, the requirements as to maximum age, minimum and maximum height measurements and eyesight.
The Regulations also make a number of consequential amendments to the 1979 Regulations.
