An Act to make further provision as to the salary of the Comptroller and Auditor General and the performance of his duties.

1 Salary of Comptroller.

There shall be paid to the holder of the office of Comptroller and Auditor General the same salary as if he were employed in the civil service of the State in such appointment as the House of Commons may by resolution from time to time determine; and a resolution under this subsection may take effect from the date on which it is passed or from such other date as may be specified in the resolution.

The salary payable to a holder of the office of Comptroller and Auditor General shall be abated by the amount of any pension payable to him in respect of any public office in the United Kingdom or elsewhere to which he had previously been appointed or elected.

In computing the salary of a former holder of the office of Comptroller and Auditor General for the purposes of section 13 of the Superannuation Act 1972 (pension of Comptroller and Auditor General)—

a

any abatement of that salary under subsection (3) above,

b

any temporary abatement of that salary in the national interest, and

c

any voluntary surrender of that salary in whole or in part,

shall be disregarded.

The salary payable to the Comptroller and Auditor General by virtue of this section shall be charged on and issued out of the Consolidated Fund.

2 Performance of Comptroller’s functions by authorised officer.

Subject to the next following subsection, anything which under any Act is required to be done by the Comptroller and Auditor General may be done by a principal officer of his department authorised for that purpose by the Comptroller and Auditor General.

An authority given under this section to certify and report on accounts for the House of Commons or each House of Parliament—

shall extend only to accounts in respect of which (as the case may be)—

i

the Speaker of the House of Commons has certified to the House of Commons, or

ii

the Speaker of the House of Commons has certified to the House of Commons and the Speaker of the House of Lords has certified to the House of Lords,

that the Comptroller is unable to do so himself; and

b

shall cease on a vacancy arising in the office of Comptroller and Auditor General.

3 Short title, citation and repeal.

This Act may be cited as the Exchequer and Audit Departments Act 1957, and this Act and the Exchequer and Audit Departments Acts 1866 to 1950 may be cited together as the Exchequer and Audit Departments Acts 1866 to 1957.
