The M66 Motorway (Manchester Outer Ring Road, Denton to Middleton Section) and Connecting Roads Scheme 1988

The Secretary of State for Transport makes this Scheme in exercise of powers conferred by sections 16, 17, 19 and 106 of the Highways Act 1980(1), and now vested in him(2), and of all other enabling powers:

1.  The Secretary of State is authorised to provide for the use of traffic of Classes I and II of the classes of traffic set out in Schedule 4 to the Highways Act 1980—

(a)a special road along the route described in Schedule 1 to this Scheme (this special road being in this Scheme referred to as “the Motorway”), and

(b)special roads along the routes described in Schedule 2 to this scheme for the purposes of connecting the Motorway with other highways at the places stated in that schedule (these special roads being in this Scheme referred to as “the connecting roads”).

2  The centre line of each of the special roads is indicated by a heavy black line on the deposited plan.

3.  The special roads shall become trunk roads on the date when this scheme comes into force.

4.  The Secretary of State is also authorised to construct as part of the Motorway and the connecting roads numbered 3 and 4 on Map No 1 in the deposited plan the bridge specified in Schedule 3 to this scheme.

5.  In this Scheme:—

(1) all measurements of distance are measured along the route of the relevant highway;

(2) (i) “the deposited plan” means the plan folio numbered HA16/1 CNW 208 marked “The M66 Motorway (Manchester Outer Ring Road, Denton to Middleton Section) and Connecting Roads Scheme 1988”, containing 1 key plan and 2 Scheme plans bound together and numbered 1 and 2, signed by authority of the Secretary of State and deposited at the Department of Transport, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, LONDON SW1P 3PY.

(ii)“the special roads” means the Motorway and the connecting roads

6.  This Scheme shall come into force on 27th October 1988 and may be cited as the M66 Motorway (Manchester Outer Ring Road, Denton to Middleton Section) and Connecting Roads Scheme 1988.

SCHEDULE 1ROUTE OF THE MOTORWAY

A route, about 16.1 kilometres in length, starting in Denton in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside at a point approximately 300 metres south of Manchester Road (A57), 100 metres east of the junction of Thompson Road and Harris Avenue and proceeding in a generally northerly then north-westerly direction and ending in Rhodes in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury at a point on the roundabout on Middleton Road (A576) at Rhodes approximately 325 metres north-west of the junction of Middleton Road (A576) and Heywood Old Road (A6045)

SCHEDULE 2ROUTES OF THE CONNECTING ROADS

Junction with Manchester Road (A57) at Denton

1.  Two routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Motorway with a roundabout to be constructed on Manchester Road (A57), west of Denton Reservoir. (The special roads along these routes being respectively given the reference numbers 1 and 2 on Scheme Plan No 1 in the deposited plan).

Junction with a proposed all purpose road to connect Audenshaw Road (B6390) with Manchester Road (A635) at Audenshaw

2.  Two routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Motorway with a proposed all purpose road at Audenshaw, to be constructed in connection with the Motorway to connect Audenshaw Road (B6390) with Manchester Road (A635). (The special roads along these routes being respectively given the reference numbers 3 and 4 on Scheme Plan No 1 in the deposited plan).

Junction with Manchester Road (A635) at Ashton-under-Lyne

3.  Three routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Motorway with the improved Manchester Road (A635) at Ashton-under-Lyne, as proposed to be constructed in connection with the Motorway. (The special roads along these routes being respectively given the reference numbers 5, 6 and 7 on Scheme Plan No 1 in the deposited plan).

Junction with Manchester Road (A62) and Hollins Road at Hollinwood

4.  Two routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Motorway with the improved Manchester Road (A62) and Hollins Road (A6104) at Hollinwood as proposed to be constructed in connection with the Motorway (the special roads along these routes being respectively given the reference numbers 8 and 9 on Scheme Plan No 2 in the deposited plan).

Junction with a proposed all purpose road to connect Hollinwood Avenue (A6104) with Broadway (A663), and junction with a proposed roundabout on Broadway (A663)

5.  One route to connect the northbound carriageway of the Motorway with a proposed all purpose road to connect Hollinwood Avenue (A6104) with a proposed roundabout on Broadway (A663); two routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Motorway with a proposed roundabout to be constructed over the Motorway and giving access to Broadway (A663) at Chadderton. (The special roads along these routes being respectively given the reference numbers 10, 11 and 12 on Scheme Plan No 2 in the deposited plan).

Junction with a roundabout as proposed to be improved at Middleton Road (A576) at Rhodes.

6.  Two routes to connect the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Motorway with Middleton Road (A576) at Rhodes. (The special roads along these routes being respectively given the reference numbers 13 and 14 on Scheme Plan No 2 in the deposited plan).
