The Local Government Changes for England (Lord-Lieutenants and Sheriffs) Order 1997

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 17 and 26 of the Local Government Act 1992(1), and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Local Government Changes for England (Lord-Lieutenants and Sheriffs) Order 1997 and shall come into force on 1st April 1998.

Lord-Lieutenants

2.  In the Lieutenancies Act 1997(2), in paragraph 3 of Schedule 1 (counties in England for the purposes of the Act), the following entries shall be inserted at the appropriate place in the Table in alphabetical order—

CambridgeshireCambridgeshire and Peterborough(3);
CheshireCheshire, Halton and Warrington(4);
DevonDevon, Plymouth and Torbay(5);
EssexEssex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock(6);
KentKent and the Medway Towns(7);
LancashireLancashire, Blackburn and Blackpool(8);
NottinghamshireNottinghamshire and Nottingham(9); and
ShropshireShropshire and The Wrekin(10).

Sheriffs

3.—(1) In the Sheriffs Act 1887(11), in Schedule 2A (counties in England for the purposes of the Act), the following entries shall be inserted at the appropriate place in the Table in alphabetical order—

CambridgeshireCambridgeshire and Peterborough;
CheshireCheshire, Halton and Warrington;
DevonDevon, Plymouth and Torbay;
EssexEssex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock;
KentKent and the Medway Towns;
LancashireLancashire, Blackburn and Blackpool;
NottinghamshireNottinghamshire and Nottingham; and
ShropshireShropshire and The Wrekin.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order makes incidental, consequential, transitional or supplementary provision in relation to orders already made under section 17 of the Local Government Act 1992 which effect structural and boundary changes in relation to local government areas in England.

Article 2 amends Schedule 1 to the Lieutenancies Act 1997 and article 3 amends Schedule 2A to the Sheriffs Act 1887. In each case, the Schedule identifies the areas which constitute counties in England for the purposes of the Act concerned.

A county of Peterborough is constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1878.

Counties of Halton and Warrington are constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1863.

Counties of Plymouth and Torbay are constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1865.

Counties of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock are constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1875.

A county of the Medway Towns is constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1876.

Counties of Blackburn and Blackpool are constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1868.

A county of Nottingham is constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1877.

A county of The Wrekin is constituted on 1st April 1998 by S.I. 1996/1866.
