Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order amends the Weights and Measures Act 1985 (“the Act”).

The amendments made to the Act are a result of the amendment made to the Weights and Measures (Intoxicating Liquor) Order 1988 (S.I. 1988/2039) by the Weights and Measures (Intoxicating Liquor) (Amendment) Order 1994 (S.I. 1994/1883) which enabled a second metric quantity, namely 35 ml, to be used for the sale of gin, rum, vodka and whisky for consumption on licensed premises.

In order that double measures of this second metric measure may be dispensed without the need to use a 35 ml capacity measure twice for the purpose of measuring a quantity of 70 ml, the Act is amended so as to allow the use of a 70 ml capacity measure (article 2).

A Regulatory Impact Assessment of the costs and benefits which will result from this Order has been prepared.
