(This note is not part of the Order)
Under section 1 of the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”), a referendum was held on 5 May 2011 on the voting system for parliamentary elections.
More votes were cast in favour of continuing to use the “first past the post system” than in favour of using the “alternative vote” system instead.
Accordingly, under section 8(2) of the 2011 Act the Minister is obliged to make an order repealing section 9 of, and Schedule 10 and Part 1 of Schedule 12 to the 2011 Act. These are the provisions in the 2011 Act that would have been necessary to give effect to the alternative vote system at parliamentary elections.
This Order repeals these provisions with effect from the day after the day on which the Order is made.
