Citation and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Social Security Act 1989 (Commencement No. 5) Order 1994.

(2) In this Order references to “the Act” are references to the Social Security Act 1989.

Appointed day

2.  The day appointed for the coming into force of—

(a)the provisions of the Act specified in Part I of the Schedule to this Order, for the purposes only of giving effect to the provisions of the Act specified in Part II of that Schedule;

(b)the provisions of the Act specified in Part II of the Schedule to this Order; and

(c)section 23 of the Act in so far as it relates to the provisions specified in the Schedule to this Order,

is 23rd June 1994.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order provides for the coming into force of certain provisions of Schedule 5 to the Social Security Act 1989, and section 23 of the Act in so far as it relates to them, on 23rd June 1994. These are—

• Schedule 5, paragraph 5 (except 5(2)(b) and (c)) relating to unfair maternity provisions;

• Schedule 5, paragraph 6 (except 6(3)(b) and (c)) relating to unfair family leave provisions.

It also provides for the coming into force on that date of paragraphs 1, 2 (in part), 3 (in part), 7 (in part), 9 and 10 of Schedule 5 but for the purposes only of giving effect to paragraphs 5 and 6.
